This is the first film in English by Iñárritu since ‘The Revenant’ in 2015
Tom Cruise is joining the next film by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
The actor’s rep, 61, told PEOPLE on Thursday that he will be the lead in the upcoming film.
The plot is still a secret. The only thing we know is the writers: Iñárritu, Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone. The director, Giacobone and Dinelaris also worked on the 2014 Oscar-winner Birdman.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, and said that Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are negotiating to get the project, while Deadline said Cruise will also produce with Legendary.
Iñárritu’s last film in English was The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio in 2015.
Cruise made a strategic deal with Warner Bros. last month, where he will collaborate with CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy on both new and existing projects.
Cruise is very busy. In January, THR said that Cruise could be part of a Top Gun 3 after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, written by Christopher McQuarrie, Eric Singer and Ehren Kruger.
The report said that Kruger is writing already, and sources said to the outlet that Maverick director Joe Kosinski might come back to direct again.
Cruise has not said publicly if he will do more of the franchise, but Miles Teller, who is Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in the film, said in July 2022 that he and Cruise had “talked a bit” about the chance of another movie.
Glen Powell, who portrayed Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, also spoke to PEOPLE in August 2022.
“There have been talks [but] it’s beyond my control,” he said then. “It’s really Tom’s call. It’s up to [producer Jerry Bruckheimer]. It’s up to the big shots, but I’ll be there if they invite me back to Miramar.”
The action movie was a huge hit after the COVID-19 pandemic, with both viewers and Hollywood. Steven Spielberg even said to Cruise that he “saved Hollywood’s a–” with the film at an Oscars nominees luncheon.
