The new film Superman: Legacy will bring the DC movie universe back to their origins, and it will be released in theaters in 2025. The movie was revealed in January 2023, only one month after Henry Cavill announced that he was done playing Superman.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone, I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

Cavill debuted as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel and had his last appearance as Clark Kent in 2022’s Black Adam.

In June 2023, DCU revealed that David Corenswet would be replacing him as the superhero with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Five months later, Gunn posted on Instagram Threads that the script for the film is “99.9%” finished. “I’m always tweaking small things but it’s basically done since way before the strike,” he said.

What Is the Release Date of ‘Superman: Legacy’?

Director and writer James Gunn revealed in January 2023 that the new movie will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025. “I’m writing this myself, I’m in the thick of it and I’m enjoying it a lot,” Gunn said in a YouTube video uploaded by DC at the time.
