Jennifer Hudson Mourns the Loss of Debra Byrd, American Idol Voice Coach, at 72
Debra Byrd, the esteemed voice coach known for her work on American Idol and various other talent shows, passed away at the age of 72 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, as reported by Deadline. The cause of death and specific location details were not disclosed.
Byrd had a significant impact on American Idol, serving as a vocal coach for ten seasons. She also lent her expertise to other programs like The Voice, Canadian Idol, Military Idol, and Majors and Minors.
Throughout her career, she coached notable singers such as Kelly Clarkson and Barry Manilow, and played a pivotal role in recommending Jennifer Hudson for her acclaimed performance as Effie White in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, according to The Independent.
Expressing her grief, Hudson, 42, paid tribute to Byrd in an Instagram post on Wednesday, stating, “Heartbroken over the passing of Debra Byrd, the vocal coach on American Idol.
She encouraged and supported us from the very beginning!” Hudson expressed her gratitude for Byrd’s teachings, noting that her legacy will endure through the music of countless artists she influenced.
Hudson’s tribute included a photo of Byrd and a throwback video from their time on American Idol, where Byrd provided guidance to Hudson on vocal techniques.
Additionally, the post featured a picture of Byrd and Hudson alongside Elton John, playing the piano. Barry Manilow, 80, also expressed his sorrow on social media, sharing a heartfelt tribute and a throwback photo of himself with Byrd.
“This is one of the saddest days of my life,” Manilow wrote. “I just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that Debra is no longer with me. She was one of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever had. I will miss you forever, my love. -Barry Manilow,” he concluded.
